John was a good singer and needed Pauls imput to tone down some of johns later Beatles songs.
McCartney tried all types of things and some worked and some didnt. Even when John was alive McCartney was selling more albums than all beatles combined and trying different types of music and adding effect etc. Paul McCartney is still the best, he still plays today and i do not think John could of kept up.
